Congress Leaders Push for Rahul Gandhi to Become Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha

With the Congress party securing 99 seats in the Lok Sabha following a strong showing by the INDIA bloc in the general elections, the clamor for Rahul Gandhi to take up the post of Leader of Opposition in the parliament is growing louder.

Congress MP-elect Manickam Tagore took to social media to urge the former party president to assume the role of Leader of Congress in the lower house. Tagore, who won from Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu, emphasized that he sought votes in the name of Rahul Gandhi and believes he should lead the party in the Lok Sabha.

Echoing similar sentiments, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha stated that Rahul Gandhi led the campaign frontally and should take on the mantle of Lok Sabha parliamentary party leadership. Congress leader Karti Chidambaram also expressed his opinion that Rahul Gandhi should take up the position of Leader of Opposition on behalf of the Congress.

Rahul Gandhi, who stepped down as the Congress president after the party’s defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, is being credited for the party’s remarkable comeback in 2024. Even Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut praised Gandhi, stating that if he is willing to accept the leadership, there would be no objection as he has proven himself as a national leader multiple times.

Despite being a prominent figure in Indian politics since his debut in 2004, Rahul Gandhi has not held any constitutional post, even when his party was in power. Last year, he was expelled from Parliament due to a defamation case but was later reinstated by the Supreme Court.

As discussions continue within the Congress party regarding the leadership in the Lok Sabha, all eyes are on Rahul Gandhi and whether he will accept the role of Leader of Opposition.
