Austal USA Launches Second Growth Project in Mobile, Alabama, Creating 2,000 New Jobs

Austal USA, a key player in Alabama’s defense industry, has launched its second growth project in Mobile, Alabama, with the construction of a state-of-the-art submarine module manufacturing facility. This new facility, known as MMF3, will focus on producing structural assemblies for Columbia- and Virginia-class submarines for the U.S. Navy.

Spanning over 369,600 square feet, the MMF3 project is set to be operational by late 2026, utilizing advanced technologies under the Industry 4.0 concept. This expansion is part of Austal’s ongoing efforts to support the U.S. Navy’s submarine programs and enhance Alabama’s role in national defense.

The MMF3 project, along with another expansion initiative, is expected to create 2,000 new jobs, solidifying Austal USA’s position as a major employer in Alabama. With a combined investment of $750 million, these projects are set to provide a significant economic boost to the state, particularly Mobile County, where the majority of Austal’s production workforce is based.

Governor Kay Ivey praised the project’s economic and strategic significance, highlighting Alabama’s growing leadership in the defense industry and commitment to national security. Austal USA President Michelle Kruger emphasized the company’s dedication to national security and workforce development, thanking the local community and state for their support.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the MMF3 project marks another milestone in Austal’s growth plans, following a previous expansion project earlier this year. These developments underscore the company’s strategic role in Alabama’s defense industry and strong partnerships with local and state entities.

Ellen McNair, secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce, emphasized the importance of Austal USA’s contributions in advancing Alabama’s stature as a leader in advanced manufacturing and national defense. The integration of advanced manufacturing technologies in the new facility is expected to further solidify Alabama’s position in the defense industry and support high-quality jobs in the Mobile area.

Overall, Austal USA’s expansion projects are set to have a significant impact on Alabama’s economy and national defense efforts, showcasing the state’s commitment to innovation and growth in the defense sector.
