Ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist sued for wrongful death in alleged fatal collision
LOS ANGELES — Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer is facing a lawsuit for wrongful death and negligence after a tragic incident earlier this year. The lawsuit, filed by Ashley Sanchez, the daughter of the victim, alleges that Klinghoffer hit and killed 47-year-old Israel Sanchez while he was walking in a crosswalk in Alhambra, east of Los Angeles.
The collision occurred on March 18, when Klinghoffer, driving a black SUV with no license plates, allegedly turned left at an intersection with a marked crosswalk. Video footage obtained from a neighbor’s Ring camera shows the moment of impact, where Israel Sanchez was struck by the vehicle. He suffered fatal blunt force trauma to the head and passed away a few hours later at the hospital.
The lawsuit also claims that Klinghoffer was using a cellphone while driving, as video evidence shows him holding an object above the steering wheel. Additionally, the footage reveals a 40-foot-wide grassy median that should have given Klinghoffer enough time to see pedestrians in the crosswalk.
Ashley Sanchez, in a statement, described her father as a talented chef and a loving grandfather, whose life was tragically cut short by the careless actions of another. Klinghoffer, who is currently on tour with Pearl Jam, has not commented on the lawsuit.
The plaintiff’s attorney, Nick Rowley, criticized law enforcement for not properly investigating the incident, calling it a “reckless homicide.” Alhambra police spokesperson Sgt. Brian Chung stated that the case is still active and could not provide further details at this time.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the devastating consequences of negligence behind the wheel. The legal proceedings surrounding this case will undoubtedly continue to unfold as more details come to light.
