102-Year-Old Navy Veteran Dies En Route to D-Day Commemoration

The world lost a true hero on his way to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Robert Persichitti, a 102-year-old Navy veteran, passed away en route to the ceremony in France. Persichitti, who had flown to Germany from New York before boarding a ship sailing in the North Sea to Normandy, suffered a medical emergency and had to be airlifted to a hospital in Germany.

Despite his heart issues, Persichitti’s cardiologist encouraged him to attend the ceremony, showing his dedication to honoring his fellow veterans. Traveling companion Al DeCarlo shared that Persichitti did not die alone and passed away peacefully.

Although Persichitti did not participate in the D-Day invasion, he served as a radioman second class on the USS Eldorado in the Pacific near Iwo Jima. He witnessed history when the flag was raised on Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945.

DeCarlo recalled Persichitti reminiscing about his time in the military with another veteran before his medical emergency, highlighting the bond between those who served. Honor Flight Rochester described Persichitti as “a great friend to many,” honoring his legacy and service to his country.

As the world commemorates the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Persichitti’s story serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans and the importance of honoring their memory.
