Stop & Shop to Close 32 Underperforming Stores in New England

Stop & Shop, a beloved community grocery chain, has announced plans to close the doors on 32 of its underperforming stores across five New England states by the end of the year. The closures will affect stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.

The decision to close these stores comes as part of a strategic evaluation of the company’s overall store portfolio to create a healthy base for future growth. Stop & Shop President, Gordon Reid, expressed pride in the deep roots and community ties the chain has developed over more than 100 years.

The closures are expected to be completed on a rolling basis, with the last stores shutting down on or before Nov. 2. Despite these closures, Stop & Shop will continue to operate 350 stores in the five states.

One of the key concerns surrounding the closures is the fate of the 58,000 employees currently working at the affected stores. Stop & Shop has assured that all associates at the impacted stores will be offered other opportunities within the company. Specific store closing dates will be communicated to local customers well in advance.

While the closures may be a difficult decision, Stop & Shop is looking ahead at future plans for the brand. The company has made investments in delivering lower prices and improving customer experience through store remodels. Since 2018, over 190 store remodels have been completed, with a focus on enhancing the customer shopping experience.

Despite the challenges, Stop & Shop remains committed to nourishing its associates, customers, and communities. The grocery chain is optimistic about the future and the growth opportunities that lie ahead.
