Controversy Surrounding Elon Musk’s $1 Million Giveaway: Philadelphia District Attorney Files Lawsuit
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner has taken legal action against tech billionaire Elon Musk and his pro-Trump group, America PAC, over a controversial $1 million giveaway to registered voters. Krasner filed a civil lawsuit, alleging that the giveaway is an “illegal lottery scheme” that violates Pennsylvania law.
The lawsuit claims that America PAC and Musk are enticing citizens to provide personal information and make a political pledge in exchange for a chance to win $1 million, which constitutes an unlawful lottery. Despite the legal challenge, Musk’s super PAC announced a $1 million winner from Hastings, Michigan.
A judge has scheduled a hearing on the matter for Friday, allowing the sweepstakes to continue for the time being. Krasner’s office argues that Pennsylvania law mandates all lotteries to be operated by the state, and Musk’s giveaway is operating outside of legal boundaries.
The lawsuit also alleges that the selection of winners is not truly random, as individuals who have attended Trump rallies in Pennsylvania have been selected. The US Justice Department has warned Musk’s super PAC that the giveaway may violate federal laws against offering cash for voter registration.
President Joe Biden has criticized Musk’s giveaway as “totally inappropriate,” but did not comment on its legality. The story continues to develop as legal proceedings unfold.
