House Republicans Recommend Criminal Charges Against Hunter and James Biden for False Statements to Congress

House Republicans Send Criminal Referrals for Hunter and James Biden to DOJ

Top House Republicans have sent criminal referrals to the Justice Department recommending that President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, and his brother, James Biden, be charged with making false statements to Congress. The move comes as Hunter Biden is currently on trial for unrelated gun charges in federal court in Delaware.

The letter from the GOP committee chairmen to Attorney General Merrick Garland and special counsel David Weiss accuses Hunter and James Biden of making false statements to the Oversight Committee and the Judiciary Committee about key aspects of the impeachment inquiry. The Republicans claim that the Bidens were trying to hinder the investigation’s focus on President Joe Biden.

Hunter Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, criticized the referrals as a desperate attempt by Republicans to distract from their failed impeachment inquiry and interfere with his client’s trial. James Biden’s lawyer, Paul Fishman, called the action a transparent and cynical attempt to retaliate for former President Donald Trump’s recent criminal conviction.

House Speaker Mike Johnson supported the move, stating that if the Attorney General wants to demonstrate that he is not targeting the President’s political opponents, he should open criminal investigations into James and Hunter Biden.

The ranking Democrat on the Oversight Committee, Rep. Jamie Raskin, mocked the move, calling it a last-ditch effort by Republicans to distract from the exoneration of President Biden. Raskin stated that the investigation has proven that President Biden did not profit from his family’s business ventures.

Both Hunter and James Biden sat for separate depositions in February as part of the impeachment investigation into the president. In his prepared opening statement, Hunter Biden denied involving his father in his business dealings.

The chairmen’s letter accuses Hunter Biden of falsely distancing himself from a corporate entity that received money from foreign individuals and entities. They also accuse James Biden of being misleading about his interactions with a business associate named Tony Bobulinski.

NBC News has reached out to the Justice Department for comment, while the White House declined to comment on the matter.
