UN employee confirmed as leader of Hamas in Lebanon by UN agency
UN Employee Confirmed as Leader of Hamas in Lebanon Killed in Israeli Strike
In a shocking turn of events, a United Nations agency has confirmed that an individual described by Israel as the leader of Hamas in Lebanon was actually a UN employee. Fateh Al Sharif, who was under investigation for his political activities, was killed in an Israeli strike in Lebanon.
The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNWRA) revealed that Sharif had been on “administrative leave” since March. The Israeli military accused him of coordinating “terror activities” with members of Hezbollah, further complicating the situation in the region.
Both Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza are known to be backed by Iran and are designated as terrorist groups by the UK and the United States. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) stated that Sharif played a key role in Hamas’ activities in Lebanon, both politically and militarily.
The confirmation of Sharif’s employment with UNWRA is likely to fuel tensions between Israel and the UN body, especially after previous allegations of UNWRA employees being involved in terrorist activities. Last year, the Israeli government accused several UNWRA employees in Gaza of being linked to atrocities, leading to funding suspensions from countries like the UK.
Despite the controversies, the new Labour government reinstated payments to UNWRA in July. However, the agency has taken action by firing employees and launching investigations into the allegations. With ongoing inquiries and investigations into other staff members, the situation remains tense and complex.
