U.S. Coast Guard Rescues 13 People from Distressed Vessel near Guam

In a dramatic rescue operation, the U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam saved 13 individuals from a distressed vessel located about 13 nautical miles north of Guam on Sunday. The successful mission was a result of seamless collaboration with Guam Fire Rescue and other agencies, highlighting the importance of partnerships and safety measures at sea.

The Joint Rescue Sub-Center received an urgent notification from Guam Fire Rescue and 911 dispatch about a 23-foot recreational vessel, the Helen, with 13 people onboard that had run out of gas and was adrift. The quick response from the Coast Guard, including issuing marine information broadcasts and requesting aerial support, led to the safe transfer of all individuals to a Coast Guard vessel.

Upon evaluation, it was noted that several of the rescued individuals were suffering from seasickness and dehydration, emphasizing the risks involved in such situations. The boaters, who were identified as nationals of the People’s Republic of China, were transported to Hagåtña for medical assessment, although they all declined further treatment.

The Coast Guard emphasized the importance of having proper safety equipment, such as life jackets and communication devices, on board vessels, especially in emergencies. The agency remains committed to responding to maritime emergencies and protecting lives at sea in collaboration with local, federal, and military partners.
