The Importance of Parks in Our Community: A Message from the Director of Parks and Recreation
Title: Guam Parks: More Than Just a Place to “Park it Fan”
In a world where public parks are often taken for granted, the Department of Parks and Recreation in Guam is working tirelessly to highlight the importance and value of these communal spaces. With 65 parks scattered across the island, these green havens serve as more than just a backdrop for leisurely activities – they are integral to the fabric of the community.
From Governor Joseph Flores Ypao Park to Matapang Beach Park, these outdoor spaces have witnessed the birth of friendships, relationships, and countless memories. Despite their significance, public parks often rank low in funding priorities, leading to neglect and underappreciation.
Acting Parks Administrator John Taitague and his dedicated staff, supported by the DOL Dislocated Workers Program, work diligently to maintain these parks for the benefit of all. However, their efforts are sometimes thwarted by vandalism and disregard for the facilities.
The importance of public parks extends beyond mere recreation. These spaces host cultural events, concerts, and exercise activities, fostering community engagement and physical well-being. Adopt-a-Park partners like local mayors are transforming these spaces into vibrant hubs of activity, further enhancing their value to residents and visitors alike.
Former DPR Parks Administrator Dave Lotz continues to advocate for the preservation and enhancement of Guam’s parks, inspiring others to appreciate and protect these natural treasures. As former President Barack Obama aptly put it, “One of the great things about parks is that they belong to everybody.”
So next time you find yourself at a Guam park, remember that it is more than just a place to “park it fan.” It is a shared resource that enriches lives, strengthens communities, and connects us to nature and each other. Let’s show our parks the respect and appreciation they deserve, for they truly belong to all of us.
