Threats Prompt Ban on Backpacks for Guam Department of Education Schools
Guam Department of Education Implements Backpack Ban After Series of Threats
In response to a series of online threats made against four Guam Department of Education schools, classes were canceled on Friday and a ban on backpacks for students has been implemented.
The threats, which targeted John F. Kennedy High School, Simon Sanchez High School, F. B. Leon Guerrero Middle School, and Okkodo High School, prompted the Guam Police Department to investigate the incidents. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection to the threats.
To ensure the safety of students and staff, the Guam Department of Education announced that middle and high school students will not be allowed to bring backpacks, duffle bags, gym bags, large purses, or any other large bags to classes starting Monday, Sept. 30.
Education Superintendent Erik Swanson emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant and cooperating with authorities in response to online threats. He urged community members to report any suspicious activity to help law enforcement track trends and protect the community effectively.
The threats began on Thursday afternoon with JFK and Simon Sanchez, leading to the cancellation of classes for those schools. Swanson made the decision to cancel classes late Thursday night after continued threats against the double-session schools.
While the credibility of the threats is still unknown, Swanson expressed concern about the potential for harm given the availability of firearms on the island. The decision to cancel classes was made to avoid any risk and allow GPD to conduct a thorough investigation.
Additional threats were made against F. B. Leon Guerrero Middle School and Okkodo High School on Friday morning, prompting further cancellations and police presence on campus. The GDOE spokesperson confirmed that the threats were specific and are currently under review by law enforcement.
The ban on backpacks and large bags is a precautionary measure to ensure a safe and secure learning environment for all students. More information will be provided by each respective school through their social media and websites.
