New UK Prime Minister announces the end of Rwanda migrant plan | National News

Newly Elected UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Declares Tory Plan “Dead and Buried”

Newly elected UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer wasted no time in making his mark on his first full day in office. He declared the controversial Tory plan to deport migrants to Rwanda “dead and buried” and emphasized that driving growth would be his government’s top priority.

After winning a landslide election victory, Starmer expressed his eagerness for change and his party’s mandate to do politics differently. He assembled his cabinet, which included Britain’s first woman finance minister Rachel Reeves and new foreign minister David Lammy.

In a news conference, Starmer announced that he would not be continuing with the previous government’s scheme to deport migrants to Rwanda, calling it a gimmick that did not act as a deterrent. Instead, he emphasized the need for concrete improvements in people’s lives and driving growth in the country.

World leaders congratulated Starmer on his victory, with him speaking to US President Joe Biden, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, former US President Donald Trump ignored Starmer and praised his ally Nigel Farage’s far-right Reform UK party.

Starmer’s government faces challenges such as a stagnating economy, creaking public services, and a cost-of-living crisis. The election results saw Labour winning a significant number of seats, while the Conservatives suffered their worst-ever defeat. The Liberal Democrats made significant gains, but the Scottish National Party suffered losses in Scotland.

As Starmer prepares to make his debut on the international stage at a NATO summit in Washington, he remains focused on security, defense, and the UK’s unshakable support for NATO. The new Prime Minister’s leadership style and priorities signal a new era in British politics, with a focus on growth and improvement for the country.
