China’s Rare Test-Firing of Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Sparks Tensions in Indo-Pacific Region

In a rare move, China announced on Wednesday that it had test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) into international waters, causing concern and protests from neighboring countries. This launch, the first of its kind in more than 40 years, was described by Beijing as “routine” and not directed at any specific country or target.

Despite Chinese media reports claiming that “relevant countries” were given notice of the test, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand expressed their worries, stating that they had not received any warning. The launch has heightened tensions across the Indo-Pacific region, with analysts pointing to China’s increased long-range nuclear capabilities as a cause for concern.

The United States had previously warned about China’s nuclear arsenal buildup as part of its defense upgrade. An ICBM has the capability to travel over 5,500km, putting China within striking range of the US mainland and Hawaii. However, Beijing’s arsenal is still significantly smaller than that of the US and Russia, with China maintaining that its nuclear maintenance is solely for deterrence purposes.

The test launch, which took place at 08:44 local time, involved a dummy warhead that landed in the designated area in the South Pacific. While Beijing’s defense ministry described the launch as part of its “annual training,” analysts noted that China typically conducts ICBM tests internally, making this international test a significant departure from past practices.

Analysts believe that China’s actions are not just a political message but also a signal of the changing nuclear dynamics in Asia. The launch has prompted reactions from various countries, with Japan expressing “serious concern” about Beijing’s military build-up, Australia calling the action “destabilizing,” and New Zealand labeling it as “unwelcome and concerning.”
