Beryl, the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season, has intensified into an “extremely dangerous” Category 4 storm, posing a significant threat to the southeast Caribbean, according to US trackers.

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued warnings to residents in the path of Beryl, which is currently located about 350 miles east of Barbados in the Atlantic Ocean. The storm is expected to bring potentially life-threatening winds and storm surge to the region.

Residents in Barbados, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, and Tobago are under hurricane warnings, while tropical storm warnings or watches have been issued for Martinique, Dominica, and Trinidad.

In preparation for the storm, residents have been seen lining up at gas stations, stocking up on supplies at supermarkets, and boarding up their properties. The NHC has emphasized the need for residents to follow local government and emergency management instructions.

Beryl is forecasted to produce “potentially catastrophic hurricane-force winds, a life-threatening storm surge, and damaging waves” as it moves across the Windward Islands. The storm is expected to impact St. Vincent and the Grenadines as well as Grenada the most.

Experts have noted that Beryl’s rapid intensification into a Category 4 hurricane is rare for this early in the Atlantic hurricane season, which typically runs from June to November. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted an “extraordinary” hurricane season this year, with up to seven storms of Category 3 or higher.

The increase in extreme weather events, including hurricanes, has been linked to climate change, making it crucial for residents in the Caribbean and other vulnerable regions to stay informed and prepared for such natural disasters.
