Massive Ad Buy in Maryland Senate Race Boosts Republican Candidate
Republican Group Invests $18.3 Million in Ad Time for Maryland Senate Race
In a bold move to support former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan’s bid for the Maryland Senate seat in 2024, a Republican outside group, Maryland’s Future, purchased $18.3 million worth of advertising time. This massive infusion of cash aims to give Hogan an edge in the heavily Democratic state and potentially pull off an upset win.
The advertising time reserved by Maryland’s Future begins today and will run through Election Day, giving Republicans a significant advantage on Maryland airwaves unless additional Democratic funding targets the race. The group wasted no time and launched its first ad on Tuesday morning, highlighting Hogan’s independence and his record as governor.
According to AdImpact data, Republicans are set to outspend Democrats in the Maryland Senate race by a significant margin, with a projected $26.4 million in ad spending compared to Democrats’ $3.1 million from now until November.
Hogan’s campaign currently has $7.3 million worth of remaining ad time booked, while Democratic nominee Angela Alsobrooks has $912,000 booked. Additionally, the DSCC plans to spend about $1 million on a joint ad campaign with Alsobrooks, and the Democratic super PAC, Women Vote!, has $1.2 million in ad reservations.
Prior to this latest development, Democrats had outspent Republicans on advertising in Maryland, with $11.6 million compared to $7.1 million since the primary on May 14. Alsobrooks emerged victorious after a costly campaign against Democratic Rep. David Trone, who poured over $62 million from his personal fortune into the race, flooding Maryland airwaves with ads.
