Press Telegram: Long Beach Receives $25 Million Grant for Protected Bike Lanes on Pacific Avenue

Improving Protections for Pedestrians and Cyclists Along Pacific Avenue in Wrigley Neighborhood

Long Beach, CA – Residents and visitors in the Wrigley neighborhood can look forward to safer streets and improved infrastructure along Pacific Avenue, thanks to a recent $25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The grant will fund a project to enhance Pacific Avenue with new protected bike lanes, pedestrian crossings, and other safety improvements. This initiative is part of Long Beach’s citywide efforts to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety and promote alternative modes of transportation.

Congresswoman Nanette Barragán, who advocated for the project, expressed her excitement about the positive impact it will have on the community. “This critical infrastructure project will be a great addition for the City of Long Beach and the improved health and safety of its residents,” Barragán said in a statement.

The project will add two miles of protected bike lanes, eight pedestrian crossings, new transit stops, and other upgrades to Pacific Avenue between Pacific Coast Highway and Wardlow Road. These improvements will not only enhance safety but also improve connectivity to schools, parks, public transit stations, and other key destinations in the area.

Mayor Rex Richardson also praised the project, highlighting its importance in creating a healthier and more mobile community. “When we invest in better infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users, we create safer streets for everyone,” Richardson said.

The project aligns with Long Beach’s goals to become a more bicycle-friendly city by 2040 through its Bicycle Master Plan. With continued investments in infrastructure improvements, Long Beach is on track to create a more sustainable and accessible city for all residents and visitors.
