Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov on Air Defense Support

Ukraine’s Defense Minister Rustem Umerov expressed gratitude on Wednesday for the latest air defense support pledged to Ukraine, stating that it will “significantly strengthen” the country’s defense against Russia’s full-scale invasion. This support comes in the form of new air defense systems promised by the US, Germany, Romania, the Netherlands, and Italy.

US President Joe Biden announced plans to supply new air defenses to Ukraine during a speech at the NATO summit. The US, Germany, and Romania will each provide a Patriot battery, while the Netherlands will collaborate with other countries to enable an additional Patriot battery. Italy also committed to providing a SAMP-T long-range air defense system.

In addition to these long-range aerial defense systems, the US and other countries will also supply Ukraine with “dozens” of short- and medium-range systems to help intercept Russian drones and missiles. Countries like Canada, Norway, Spain, and the UK will play a crucial role in providing these systems, with many other supporters contributing interceptor missiles.

Minister Umerov expressed his appreciation for the countries involved in the Immediate Air Defense Initiative, which has raised over $1 billion to support Ukraine’s air defense. The collective effort aims to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities and protect its cities, civilians, and critical infrastructure.
